Where are you starting from?

Certain thyroid and endocrine histories

These medications aren't prescribed to anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. This is on the label as an absolute contraindication, and it's one of the first things Dr. Carroll asks about.

A previous serious reaction

A prior serious hypersensitivity reaction to the medication or its ingredients rules it out.

Things that are worth mentioning at the visit

Any surgery, endoscopy or procedure under sedation that is planned or likely.
A history of pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or kidney trouble.
Diabetes, and anything you take for it — some combinations need care.
Pregnancy, or plans for it.
Everything else you take, prescribed or otherwise.

Having any of these doesn't automatically rule treatment out. It helps Dr. Carroll plan your care with the right level of caution.

How do I know if I qualify for weight-loss medication?

Dr. Carroll works that out with you at your first visit. He goes through your health history, the medications you already take and anything that would make these medications a poor fit, weighs that against the medical criteria for treatment, and tells you clearly whether it makes sense. The answer comes from the physician who would be managing your dose.

What happens if Dr. Carroll says I am not a good candidate?

He explains his reasoning, so you leave knowing why. The first visit is free either way.

Do I need blood work before starting semaglutide or tirzepatide?

Laboratory testing isn't routine here. If something in your history makes it sensible, Dr. Carroll will say so at the visit.

Do I need to tell the doctor about other medications I take?

Yes — all of them, including anything from another prescriber, and any condition you're being treated for. That's the single most useful thing you can bring to the first visit.

Is it normal to be nervous about weight-loss injections?

Very. It's one of the two things people raise most often, along with worrying about feeling sick. Both are worth saying out loud at your first visit, because both change how treatment is approached.

Can I restart weight-loss medication if I stopped before?

Often, yes — and what happened last time is useful information. Bring it up.
