Before you come in

About half an hour, and nothing to prepare.

A conversation with Dr. Carroll about what has been happening and what you want to change — by telemedicine, or at the Maitland office. It's free, and there's no commitment.

How the half hour goes

Roughly in this order, though it's a conversation.

George W. Carroll, MD, in a white medical coat
  1. What has been going on

Your weight history, what you've already tried, what worked for a while and what didn't. This is most of the visit, and it's the part that decides everything after it.
  2. Your health, properly

The conditions you're treated for and the medications you take. Say all of them — it's the single most useful thing you bring, and it's what rules treatment in or out.
  3. Whether this is appropriate for you

His judgment, in plain words. Florida sets standards for prescribing medication to treat obesity and he applies them alongside the prescribing information.
  4. What it would involve, and cost

If treatment makes sense, he explains what starting looks like and what it would cost before you agree to any of it. You decide after that, not before.

In the office, your weight is recorded on the office's scale. By telemedicine, you'll share what your scale at home says.

What people worry about beforehand

These are the things that come up — worth reading now.

Will I feel pressured to start?
No. You're meeting with Dr. Carroll himself, and the visit is about giving you a clear medical answer. What happens next is your decision.
Will I be judged about my weight?
Not at all. Dr. Carroll has spent his career in weight medicine, including training other physicians, so whatever you've tried before, he's heard it and he'll take it seriously.
Do I have to feel sick for it to work?
No, and it's the misunderstanding he corrects most often. In the manufacturers' own trials, how much weight people lost was largely independent of whether they had digestive effects. You don't need to feel unwell for the medication to work.
What if I change my mind afterwards?
That's completely fine. Nothing is charged at the first visit, and treatment starts only when you're ready.

Questions before you come in

Is the first visit with Dr. Carroll free?

Yes. The first visit is free, by telemedicine or in the office, and that holds whether or not you go on to be treated.

What should I bring to my first weight-loss visit?

The medications you take, including anything prescribed by someone else, and the conditions you're being treated for. If you've tried weight-loss treatment before, roughly when and what happened. You don't need records, a referral, or paperwork.

Do I need to fast or prepare before my first visit?

No. There's nothing to prepare and nothing to stop taking. Laboratory testing isn't routine here — if something in your history makes it sensible, Dr. Carroll will say so at the visit.

Will I get a prescription at my first visit?

It can be, if treatment is a good fit and you decide to go ahead. It's a clinical decision Dr. Carroll makes after hearing your history.

What if I am not sure I want to start treatment?

Take your time. Nothing begins at the first visit except a conversation, and booking it just to learn what's involved is a perfectly good reason to come.

Should I tell the doctor I am nervous about injections?

Yes, and you wouldn't be unusual — it's one of the two things people raise most often. Saying it out loud changes how the conversation goes, because it's a practical thing he can address.

How do I reschedule my first visit?

Call the office at 407-894-9663 and the front desk will find you a new time.

What happens when you call

Three steps, at your own pace.

  1. A few practical questions

The front desk takes your name and a good number to reach you, and finds a time that works. Your health questions are saved for Dr. Carroll.
  2. Your visit with Dr. Carroll

About half an hour, one on one. He goes over your history, what you've tried before and what you want to change, then tells you what he recommends.
  3. A decision you make

If treatment is a good fit, he walks you through what's involved and what it costs before anything starts. The decision is yours.
